Planetology and My Daughter
October 1, 2006
When she was born everything was realigned. The old books rewritten around this new discovery: a new formulation of how things come to be, a revised history of chance and change, this bold newcomer with her own specific gravity.
And now the redefining. We are of the same starstuff, but she’s just a visitor. The forever I thought of, the always since that moment of her first breath, turns out to be but one short arc in her journey, a path that brought her temporarily under the influence of my sunburst heart, until now the center of both our systems.
Her trajectory will take her to the icy interstellar regions, where the cold forge of the new will ring for her as it can for me only in memory, when all this was new, before her name turned to ash in my mouth.

Beautifully written, Chris. The last paragraph left me wondering … especially the line “before her name turned to ash in my mouth.”
