My Horoscope

Mine assures me that not only will I make it, I’ll actually thrive. But does adversity include a snake seeking the frog in my throat or my mother calling me by my dead brother’s name? Does the unforeseen include what I knew but refused to admit could happen to me, the one I love in bed with someone else, my growing belly, the small lump I try to ignore? And what about this whole good fortune thing… what kind of strings are attached? I know I should be disciplined and thankful for the everyday overlooked– each breath, every grain of rice, the laughs of babies– but I wouldn’t say no to a share in the lottery or an invitation to the Mile High Club from the icy flight attendant with her immaculate scarf. Where’s the fortune in learning to appreciate things everyone already has when I could be making my nothing into something, getting tomorrow’s newspaper today, or discovering the formula for a blockbuster screenplay? If James Bond were my sign would he give up the Aston Martin and the Italian seaside villa for the satisfaction to be found in friendship between like hearts and the riches supposedly unearthed by following the Golden Rule?
