Gorilla Collins

Date September 3, 2007

There is something profoundly disturbing about this video featuring a gorilla and the classic– now completely cheesy– Phil Collins song that was actually cool back when Miami Vice was cool… back when I went to prom with a white suit and pastel pink tie over a t-shirt.

Miami Vice was never cool, and Phil’s light dimmed about the time Genesis put out their self-titled album. Pop pop pop. Sure, I like pop. But it’s sad to see a prog rocker succumb so completely. “Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me we got a groovy kind of love?” Oi.

Miami Vice *was* cool, as was that song. I should disown you for the first comment, but I understand the impulse to dismiss something that is popular.

And what’s the problem with pop? It’s mostly superior to rock, particularly now, and Genesis’ brief prog-rock posing was the aberration– they started with pop and will eventually end there as they should. That being said, I don’t much care for most of their music, though “That’s All” is catchy.
