KindOf NaPoWriMo

Date April 4, 2008

Feeling a need to get out of a writing rut that is laying waste to some part of my life (and envious of all those photography nuts with their 366 photos projects), I’m starting my own daily poem project that is like National Poetry Writing Month. Kind Of. The rules for my KindOfNaPoWriMo are:

  • a poem a day, any length, any form, any subject… for 30 days
  • prompts are OK (tonight I’m using one of Robert Lee Brewer’s prompts)
  • 15 minutes allowed per poem from the moment pen first touches paper

The last rule is to keep me from frittering around forever, as I usually do, before deciding that the poem is best left in the notebook.

While I’ve hated many aspects of NaNoWriMo I like your interpretation for writing poetry, and would like to follow suit on my own. I’m thinking about an alteration that would make the month more productive to me, and that’s to allow for more than 15 minutes (I can’t imagine writing that fast!)

Thanks for your kind comment on my other poem too… if/when I go back to edit it, it will get chopped down a bit– as usual, things started rolling for me toward the end.

I hope you do your own version of NaPoWriMo– The 15 minute thing is completely an invention of mine to deal with my own habits. I think the only original rule was a poem a day for 30 days…

The last time I did a poem a day it was in response to something Marvin Bell said in an interview but I only made it a few days before I got lost in revisions. It’s weird to put naked, quick, mostly un-edited work… but for me, because I am a slow writer, I need a kick to just write quickly and spontaneously.
