Both robbed of air, we both lie in one ground,
Both whom one fire had burnt, one water drowned.

I had forgotten that John Donne had written anything about Hero and Leander, even though I’ve just finished writing a novel about him, Conceit. So I got out my editions of JD and checked and that’s the whole poem, two lines. It’s one of his epigrams, written when he was, as Richard Baker said in the 17th century, “a great visiter of ladies, a great frequenter of plays, and a great writer of conceited verses.”
Good point– I try to remember to put quotations around titles (and no ‘from’) when the pieces are complete. I’ll be watching for your novel…
Re: Conceit. So when is this novel to be published? Where will it be available? Is it mostly about Donne?
Mary’s web site yields this link with information on the book, which might help: http://www.marynovik.com/about-conceit.htm
Thanks for the link, Chris… looks interesting!
Thanks for posting that link, Chris. I’ve been pretty busy since Conceit was published by Doubleday Canada on September 1. It’s been a lot of fun, reading from the novel at various events. Now things are a bit quieter and I can think about starting a new book.
BTW, there’s some interesting background information about John Donne at my website on the “backgrounds” page, http://www.marynovik.com/backgrounds.htm
Mary
I should have also said that, for those of you interested in poetry, I also post a new poem by John Donne on my website each month, with a short commentary. Most of them have figured in my novel Conceit in some way.
I’ve just put up two new poems today at
